Imaging Software

Imaging software allows for mass distribution of operating systems and applications to workstations. Symantec's Norton Ghost allows cloning/imaging one hard disk to another, allows you to create disk images for emergencies, and allows you to restore imaged files quickly and easily.

When a company has many networked computers, it would save time by configuring one computer and image (or clone) that computer to the others. This is done by installing the operating system, applications, and any customization on one computer, and then using the imaging software clone the other computers.

Having an image of a standard computer for your organization can reduce setup times in the following situations:

·        Purchasing a new computer

·        After replacing a hard disk due to a hardware failure

·        After a malicious virus damages critical files on the hard disk

·        A user or application damages critical files on the hard disk

Note: To remain legal with software licensing you must own a legal copy/license for each software title including the imaging software for each workstation. Also, when imaging Windows NT/2000, special considerations must be address such as different hardware and the Computer ID assigned.
